Karen Blackwood, born in 1960 in Nashua, NH, is a trained fine artist, earning her BA in Studio Art studying under Conley Harris and Sigmund Abeles at the University of NH with continued studies at the Art Students League of NY and the California Institute of Art. Since her move to the North Shore of Boston, she has established herself as one of the foremost seascape painters working today.
Trained in the classical tradition, Karen painted portraits and figurative work before focusing on landscapes and seascapes. As a member of the California Art Club, a passion for landscapes bloomed among a group of plein-air painters inspired by the rich tradition in California Impressionism. Like the California Impressionists, Karen feels light is a defining factor and it is the atmospheric quality of the light that she captures in her paintings. Now living in the coastal community of Newburyport, Massachusetts, marine scenery is providing her with endless inspiration for her work, garnering her awards in the International Artists Magazine Competition, Multiple Boldbrush Online Competitions, The Art Muse Online Competition and the Oil Painters of America Online Competition.
Karen's paintings have been included in exhibitions organized by the American Society of Marine Artists 17th Annual Exhibition touring 6 museums across the country, the Cultural Center Of Cape Cod' for a Special Exhibit showcasing the Regions Finest Marine Artists, The Huntington Museum in Pasadena, CA, and the Pasadena Historical Society as well as solo shows in California, Michigan and New England.
